Hi Kiero!

Apologize for the delay but your question was actually so good it made us realize our corruption system was flawed 😆

We had to do some brainstorming to come up with a better version. We will edit the Chapter and I will post the changes both in the dedicated section of this forum and in this post.

Thank you for bringing this up!

Here are the revised rules for Corruption:

Corruption

As Assets become larger, employing more and more individuals, they inevitably become more corrupt. Reasons for this include individuals filling their own pockets, not doing their job properly, or accepting bribes. Counties do not generate Corruption.

A Leader first confirms the Corruption Level for each Asset they control, each modified by their Loyalty as below:

Table XX: Corruption Level Loyalty Modifier

Loyalty

Asset Level Modifier

Loyal

-2

Cooperative

-1

Aligned

0

Hostile

+1

Rebellion

(Assets in Rebellious Counties never generate Corruption as they do not generate Income)

Once Assets have their Corruption Level modified by Loyalty, each is further modified by the relevant Faction Skill of their Leader.

Effective Corruption Level = Asset Level + Loyalty Modifier + Leader’s Faction Skill

This Effective Corruption Level then generates Corruption according to the following table:

Table XX: Effective Corruption Level to Corruption

Effective Corruption Level

Corruption

0-3

0

4

1

5

1

6

2

7

2

8

3

9

3

10

4

The cost of Corruption to a Leader is equal to the sum of their Assets’ Corruption. This cost is applied to a Leader’s Seasonal Income’s Wealth before any other Expenses.

Example: Earth and Sky owns only 1 Faith Asset that is Level 4 or higher – Lautrem [4]. Lautrem is currently Cooperative to Earth and Sky, so its Corruption Level is reduced by 1 to Corruption Level 3.

Corruption Level 3 generates 0 Corruption, which is ideal for squeezing every last drop of Income from this Asset. This may change if the Loyalty drops however.

Sevybeth [3] and Lightborne [3] are both Hostile to Earth and Sky – their Faith Assets each generate 1 Corruption. Combined, this is enough Corruption to cost 2 Wealth each Season.

If the Leader of Earth and Sky had a Faction Skill (Faith) of 1, then these Corruption would each be reduced by 1, but only for their Faith Assets.

In a later Season, Lautrem’s Loyalty to Earth and Sky changes to Rebellion. While it now generates no Corruption Points, it also generates no Income. The Loyalty of Lautrem should be resolved as a priority.

If Corruption cannot be paid, then for every Asset that the Leader owns in that County, that County’s Loyalty drops by 1 level.

Just noticed in your equation it might need to read as Asset Level + Loyalty Modifier - Leader Skill (you currently have a plus + ).  🙂

I apologize if this is in the rules, but can you start, or increase, corruption in another domain/county that you do not control?  Effectively start a criminal racket in a neighboring/enemy territory and funnel money/assets to yourself?  I know my players will ask this...

Hi!

That sounds like a fun idea indeed but we are constantly confronted to a difficult choice: "keep it simple" vs "give more options".

Some players will say the rules as they stand are already very complex, others will keep asking for more 😀

We decided to limit ourselves to the current level of complexity and we are trying to test what we wrote rather than to add more rules.

However, what you suggest sounds like a very good house rule and I could imagine adding it to the list of things you can do with an Action of Espionage.

A successful action could temporarily increase the corruption level of an asset. The DC and the success level of the roll could determine the duration and the magnitude of the effect.

Thanks for the input!
